Seed Grant Program

The Seed Grant Program was established by the NKU Research Foundation to support and strengthen faculty research by providing funding for initiating research that will lead to developing externally funded grant proposals.

Maximum Grant: $3,000

Seed Grant Submission Deadline:  Applications Accepted Continuously

Proposal Format FormsWord     Guidelines: PDF

Eligibility: Faculty must be tenured or have tenure-track appointment at time of application.  Faculty may hold only one Seed Grant at a time.

Funds may be used for expenses directly related to the development of the external proposal(s):

  • Travel Funds (e.g. to work with collaborators or mentors, etc.)
  • Student or hourly assistants
  • Supplies or software
  • Other expenses critical to development of a successful external support proposal

Note:  Funds can not be used for faculty release time or replacement expenses.

Restrictions/Conditions: Seed Grant proposals will be reviewed by the NKU Research Advisory Council who will provide evaluations and recommendations to Dr. Salina Shrofel, Graduate Dean and Associate Provost for Research.   All final Seed Grant award decision(s) rest with Dr. Shrofel.  Grantees will be required to provide scheduled progress reports to the Research, Grants, and Contracts (RGC) Office and to submit at least one major proposal (> $10,000) to an external funding source within one year of award.  Failure to provide all the required Seed Grant application materials may result in the application being rejected. Failure to submit a major proposal within one year will result in the PI becoming ineligible to receive any future Seed Grant funding.

How to Apply: Submit the following application materials in hard copy format to the NKU Research Foundation in 616 Lucas Administration Building.  All items should be typed utilizing 12 point font:

  • At least one (or more as appropriate), Abstract of External Proposal to be Developed using the required format and identifying the external funding source(s) [see detailed information in guidelines and forms].
  • Seed Grant Summary and Budget describing timing and proposed use of the Seed Grant funding including a detailed budget for funds.

Notification of Action and Handling of the Grant Account: Applicants will be notified by the RGC Office of the status of their application approximately three weeks after submission. Unless a longer timeline is approved, all funding must be used within one year of the grant; unused funds will revert back to the Seed Grant Fund. All Seed Grants will terminate when recipients’ appointments at NKU come to an end, and unused funds will revert to the Seed Grant Fund
